Above Krya, the medieval walls put Livadia’s river gorge and townscape into perspective. The castle became an important Catalan stronghold after the conquest of Livadia in 1311, and its surviving fortifications reflect several phases of building and repair.
The Walk Up from Krya
Combine the river and castle as two distinct parts of your visit. The uphill approach has steep and uneven sections; it is not a continuation of the pushchair-friendly riverside stretch.
- Begin beside the water in Krya. Enjoy the bridges and riverside area before deciding whether the climb suits your group.
- Take the established uphill approach. Wear shoes with grip and follow on-site signs. Avoid shortcuts over walls or unstable ground.
- Pause for the view over Livadia. Leave enough daylight and energy for the descent, then return to town for a meal.

The Oracle Below
The Oracle of Trophonios belongs to the ancient sacred landscape of Livadia. Its precise underground setting has not been securely identified for a public visit. Read the oracle’s story alongside the castle and river, without treating the castle as an entrance to an excavated oracle chamber.
Practical Notes
Wear sturdy shoes as the path is steep and rocky in sections. Bring water in summer. The views are best in the late afternoon light. The castle walk can be combined with the Krya riverside walk for a complete morning or afternoon outing that covers the full range of Livadia’s most atmospheric spaces.

The Castle of Livadia and the Echoes of a Forgotten Frontier
The Castle of Livadia dominates the landscape from its elevated position, overlooking the town and the valley below. Built and reshaped across different historical periods, it reflects the strategic importance of Livadia as a stronghold in Central Greece. Its walls carry traces of Byzantine, Frankish, and Ottoman influence, each leaving their mark on the structure and its story.
Rising above the town on its rocky hill, the Castle of Livadia stands as a silent witness to centuries of battles, empires, and everyday life, offering sweeping views and a powerful sense of history that still shapes the identity of the region today.

Access today
The castle is an unticketed site without an organised tourist reception. Do not expect a staffed entrance or visitor services. Follow any on-site restrictions and avoid entering unstable or closed areas.
