Prosilio: A Mycenaean Discovery

Learn about the monumental Mycenaean chamber tomb at Prosilio. The excavation site is not open for routine public visits.

Prosilio adds an important chapter to the Mycenaean history of Boeotia. A monumental rock-cut chamber tomb near the village was investigated by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Boeotia and the British School at Athens.

A monumental chamber tomb

The British School at Athens records initial identification and partial excavation in 2014, followed by major excavation in 2017. Dated to the Mycenaean period, the tomb is notable for its scale. A chamber tomb is cut into the rock, unlike the built tholos tomb known as the Treasury of Minyas at Orchomenos.

Archaeological context, not a visitor stop

The excavation site is not open for routine public visits. Do not include entry to the tomb in your itinerary or approach it as an organised attraction. This page explains the discovery’s place in the region’s archaeology.

Where to continue your visit

For a practical archaeological outing, use the Orchomenos guide and check current access to the Tomb of Minyas. The Prosilio finds are not presented here as objects available to see in a permanent museum display.
